Nigam has filed a complaint against the offenders under IPC sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others), the police told the media.
In an interview with news agency ANI, DCP Hemrajsingh Rajput revealed the singer was coming down from the stage when he was grabbed by a man, After a brief scuffle, the man pushed Nigam and two men from the steps, one of whom was sustained grievous injuries. The accuser has been identified as Swapnil Phaterpekar, the son of a local MLA (associated with the political party Shiv Sena) Prakash Phaterpekar.
In another interview with ANI, the ‘Abhi Mujme Kahi’ singer recalled the incident vividly. “After the concert, I was coming down from the stage when a man Swapnil Prakash Phaterpekar held me. Then he pushed Hari and Rabbani, who came to save me. Then I fell on the steps. Rabbani (the injured one who accompanied Sonu) could have died today if some iron rods were lying down. He was pushed in such a way, as you could see in the video. Even I was about to fall," he was quoted as saying. He then went on to add, that he lodged a complaint as he felt that there should be consequences for such unruly behaviour. " I filed a complaint so that people should think about forcefully taking selfies & causing scuffle," he was quoted as saying to the news agency.
MLA Phaterpekar initially denied the allegations and told the media that although the ‘Tu Kab Ye Janegi’ singer was accosted by a rowdy mob and one person from his crew was “pushed by mistake”, Nigam was safe. “Nothing happened with Sonu Nigam,” he told India Today.
